Choose the Right Furniture for Your Home Office or Work Space

When it comes to choosing furniture for your home office, you may be deterred from what you actually need. For example, that modern looking chair might not be as comfortable as it looks. Follow these tips and tricks for choosing proper furniture for your home office. Your first step should be to establish what the space is used for. Are you paying bills in your home office, or do you work from home? Sitting in an uncomfortable chair is one thing, but having to sit in an uncomfortable chair while you work all day can be detrimental to your business. Being uncomfortable while you work can lead to decreased productivity – so it’s important to choose your chair based on comfort, rather than whatever is on sale at your local retailer.

IKEA has plenty of options of inexpensive, but comfortable (and quality) work chairs. They even have a guide for choosing chairs based on how long you’ll be sitting in them for.

Your next step will be to choose the right desk for your needs. If you’ve got a lot of paperwork to spread out or books to look through, you may need a very large desk. These can run you a pretty penny, but the investment may be worth it, especially when you don’t have to stack books on top of each other while you’re trying to research a topic.

If you’re doing a lot of arts and crafts in your office space, you’ll want to find a desk top that is easy to clean. Desks that offer a glass top are a great choice because no matter what you spill on them, you can easily clean it up. Even if you’re painting, you can easy peal the dried paint right off. I prefer glass tops, but they aren’t for everyone; and they may not prove to be ideal, especially if you have small children. If you do decide to purchase a glass, look specifically for tempered glass. Purchasing tempered glass will ensure that if, by chance, the glass does break – it will break into small pieces rather than shards – which will protect you in an accident.

Last but not least is choosing ideal storage. If you’re doing a lot of paperwork, it’s ideal for you to purchase a few filing cabinets. Sure, they’re not the most attractive piece of furniture – but they can be customized with a can of spray paint for relatively cheap. On the other hand, if you’re doing a lot of arts and crafts, then you can find cute and inexpensive cardboard boxes to store your supplies in.

Whatever you decide, base your office on what you’ll be doing, rather than whatever is cheapest or looks good at the time. You’ll be much happier if you properly accommodate yourself.
